Ingredients

Want to know a bit more about what’s in our products and what is not in them? You’ve come to the right place. Listed in this section, in alphabetical order, are most of the ingredients we use, from seawater to seaweed, from allantoin to vitis vinifera.  You will learn about Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me and Eye of Newt. We have even thrown in a few lines of Shakespeare and a recipe or two.  We’ve tried to make this section as informative, and sometimes entertaining, as possible. We have scoured hundreds of websites to learn about all this stuff. We have put everything into our own words, sometimes doing only one or two ingredients a day. Almost all of what we learned was found on Wikipedia, and just about all of our images are licensed from iStockPhoto.  A few of them we took ourselves. We also often found ourselves reading information on healthcare sites or university and research databases.

Witches Brew?  Really?  How about what is NOT in our formulas?  “I’d much rather wash my face with chocolate than with plastic.”  That quote got our attention.  It’s from researcher Sherri Mason, an associate professor of chemistry at the State University of New York, Fredonia.  Read on.

What is she talking about?  Have you heard of micro-plastics?  These are tiny spherical particles of polyethylene also referred to as micro-beads, and are often used in cosmetics and toothpastes. These little guys are bad news for everyone.  They are so small, they pass right through municipal water systems, ending up back in the environment and our oceans.  The worst part is, they almost never disappear. Sadly, these man-made elements are beginning to make their way into our food-chain.  You can read more about micro-beads and Dr. Mason in this piece done by NPR.  Ocean Rescue formulas, in particular our exfoliants, use only natural ground pearl and pumice crystals, never artificial poly-anything.  We are also working on bamboo exfoliants.  We’ll let you know as they are introduced.

We’ve barely scratched the surface on what’s available out there, but you can see how long our list is. If you’d like to do more of your own research, head to our Research/Links section and take your pick of our resources.

Reputable manufacturers check and inspect systems regularly.

Arnica Montana

Arnica Montana is a rare plant and is actually protected in many European countries, but now cultivated on a large scale in Estonia.  It grows as a tall, aromatic herb with large yellow flowers and is part of the sunflower family.  It has been used as an herbal medicine for centuries and is rich in essential oils and fatty acids.  It is used mainly for its anti-inflammatory properties.  Arnica Montana is a pretty cool name, but this herb has a number of other interesting stage names:  led by Leopard’s Bane, Mountain Tobacco and Mountain Arnica are some of the more colorful ones.  Arnica, if you are wondering, comes from the Greek arni with translates to lamb.  Think of soft, hairy leaves and you’ll get it.  You can probably guess where the Montana part comes from…it’s derived from the Spanish word montaña, which when translated, means mountain.

Arnica Montana is found in our Dual Action Cooling Gel, Sea Clear Cleansing Gel, and Citrus Cleansing Milk.

Artemisia Vulgaris (Mugwort, also Yomogi)

Artemisia Vulgaris is used in our Marine Body Silk and Marine Hydrating Mask.  See also our Essential Oils section.

Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid that acts as a powerful antioxidant.  The primary source of astaxanthin is the microalgae known as haematococcus pluvialis.  The derivation of 40 grams astaxanthin requires about 1,000 grams of bio-mass.  The microalgae grows very rapidly, roughly doubling every week.  It does however require a high level of expertise to grow the cells from which astaxanthin is derived.  Essentially, during the growth phase, the cells develop protective measures against environmental stress which results in its antioxidant properties.  Astaxanthin has a reddish pigment and causes the distinctive color in salmon, lobster, shrimp and other seafood.  Its use in cosmetics is relatively recent.  It is valued for its ability to protect against environmental stress, sunburn, and the way the immune system functions by protecting against cell damage.  It is also being researched for its ability to treat high cholesterol and certain types of cancer.  It is considered a more potent antioxidant than vitamin E and is easily absorbed by the skin.

Astaxanthin is found in our Antioxidant Marine Serum, Oxygenated Marine Complex, and Sensitive Skin Calming Oil.

Bentonite

Bentonite is one of our more interesting ingredients, at least to the extent you want to go to the trouble of figuring out the number of things it can be used for.  First, before we frighten you with its other uses, let’s review where it comes from.  Bentonite is a naturally occurring clay, typically formed from the weathering of volcanic ash.  Its properties for cosmetic use include acting as a binder, a natural preservative, and as an absorption agent.  It is used topically to treat wounds and protect against exposure to poison ivy and poison oak.  The first thing we found that made bentonite amusing was the apparent “controversy” of what to call its various forms, and believe us, there are quite a few.  We love the way Wikipedia puts it.  And we quote:  “Experts debate a number of nomenclatorial problems with the classification of bentonite clays.”  What?  We never knew that “Name that Clay” was an actual sport.  And no kidding, in addition to its wide use in the medical and cosmetic industries, it can be found in everything from well-made sand castles to rocket engine nozzles.  Who knew?  That’s enough for our index.  Look it up if you want to know more.

Bentonite is used in our Marine Hydrating Mask.

Beta-Glucan

Beta-Glucans are beta-D-glucose polysaccharides found commonly in plants, mushrooms, and cereal grains, among other natural substances.  They are used as texturing agents and as soluble fiber supplements.  Beta glucan works at the molecular level so the picture is really really hard to see.

Essential Oils – Organic

Essential Oils are very different than pressed oils and extracts.  Essential oil from any plant is the essence of the plant itself and is really the source of its fragrance and healing power.  There are many techniques to making essential oils but one of the most common is through the use of steam, in a process similar to distillation. The result is a highly concentrated, aromatic pure liquid that really isn’t an oil as much as is the “spirit” of the plant.  They are used extensively in premium skin care products, aromatherapy, and in the mixing of high quality perfumes.

Making essential oils is an expensive process.  It requires expertise to understand what plants have what kinds of healing powers and how the essential oil is to be used.  These liquids are delicate and fragile as well, and great care is needed for their care and use in order to preserve the wealth of power these oils offer.

All of our essential oils were upgraded to organic quality in 2016.

Ocean Rescue uses a number of essential oils in our formulas and we are working with our manufacturer to understand how other essential oils can make our products even better at a cost that remains reasonable.

We wondered about a few things when preparing this.  First, after a few months of researching ingredients, we sort of took helianthus in stride.  It is from Greek, helios means sun, and anthos means flower.  Pretty easy to put that together. What about annuus.  No, it doesn’t mean that.  It means annual and it is pronounced “a new oos.”

So we got that out of the way.  How about the next issue.  Do sunflowers follow the sun?  Some say yes, some say no, so we called up a plant guy…actually a very smart female professor.  The answer is no, they do not follow the sun. We can already hear the booing out there.  Here’s the real deal.  When the flowers are growing, the leaves follow the sun, as do most flowers that depend on photosynthesis.  But when the bud blooms, the vine strengthens and that behavior stops.  The flowers face mostly the same easterly direction. Sorry.

But we didn’t stop there.  See that magical pattern in the closeup picture.  Therein lies one of the mysteries of the universe.  It’s called the Golden Spiral, or Golden Ratio. That will take an entire section to tell you about, so stay tuned.  It doesn’t have much to do with skin care.  We don’t know for certain.  As you may have noticed, we tend to stray off the beaten path now and then.  For now, think 137.5º. Are you really good at math?  Compared to us, you probably are. Can you get your concepts across to us non-math types?  Do a write-up of this pattern and send it to us.  First one in that we like the best will get posted and we’ll come up with a nice reward for you.

Isotonic Sea Water

Isotonic Seawater (Salt Water) is filtered seawater that has been diluted down to the same pure concentration of salts and minerals found in human blood. The result is water with about one-third of the salts found in regular ocean water. The most important health benefit of pure seawater is the addition of all of the ocean’s healing minerals and nutrients.

Isotonic Sea Water is used in our MicroPearl Exfoliator, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, Citrus Cleansing Milk, All Day Hydrating Mist, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Dual Action Cooling Gel, Marine Hydrating Mask, Purifying Sea Mask, SeaClear Cleansing Gel, and Marine+ Vitamin C Serum.

Juniperus communis (Juniperberry)

Juniperus communis (Juniperberry) – this little berry has lots of uses.  In Ocean Rescue’s formulations, we were a bit less imaginative than some others.  We’ll get to that in a minute.  We use the oil for its mild antiseptic properties but mainly as a natural scent.  But, one can learn a lot with just a bit of research.  Apparently, there is a tradition in Northern Poland, and only on Easter Monday mind you, where young boys chase young girls with juniper twigs, whacking them on the leg (reportedly gently) with the twigs.  It is supposed to bring love and good fortune to the girls.  Right.  My sister would have hauled off and flattened the guy.  More uses you ask?  Juniper berries were (are…we don’t know) used by Native Americans as a female contraceptive.  We really don’t want to know how that works but it does make you wonder what the inspiration was for that idea.  All we have to say is that Ocean Rescue has never chased anyone on Easter Monday, or, well, you know, done any of that with our supply of juniper.  Like we said, it just has a nice scent to it.

Juniperus communis is used in our ReFresh Marine Cleanser, Blemish Antiseptic Oil, and Spot on Acne.

Lecithin (Anacystis nidulans)

Lecithin (Anacystis nidulans) is a form of light-sensitive phytoplankton that when combined with other extracts, protects the skin from environmental stressors.

Lecithin is used in our Marine Contour Cream.

Kaolin

Kaolin is a white, soft, malleable mineral commonly found in nature.  It is ground into many forms and has a wide variety of uses, but when used in the cosmetic industry, its final state is in the form of a pale white powder.  It is used in the Ocean Rescue Purifying Sea Mask for its pore-refining benefits and the ability to draw impurities from the skin.

Kaolin is found in Spot on Acne and Purifying Sea Mask.

Lactobacillus & Coconut Extract

Lactobacillus & Coconut Extract is a naturally derived preservative designed specifically to prevent the growth of yeast and mold.  It is effective in the effort to eliminate parabens with natural antimicrobial products.   It is used together with leuconostoc, or radish root ferment, as a natural antifungal mild preservative rich inn lauric acid.

Lactobacillus & Coconut Extract is used as preservative in our MicroPearl Exfoliator, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, Citrus Cleansing Milk, All Day Hydrating Mist, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Botanical Balancing Cleanser, Marine Hydrating Mask, Purifying Sea Mask, SeaClear Cleansing Gel, ReFresh Marine Cleanser, and Marine+ Vitamin C Serum.

Laminaria Algae

Laminaria is a large brown algae, often called kelp. It is one of the world’s oldest sea plants. Laminaria algae naturally store marine minerals and trace elements in a highly concentrated form. Ocean Rescue products use these active ingredients as a protective shield against harmful environmental stressors and as a moisturizer. Laminaria in its various forms firm and smooth the skin.

Some form of Laminaria is used in all of Ocean Rescue’s products.

Lavendula Angostifolia (Lavender) Oil

Lavendula Angostifolia (Lavender) Oil – similar to its close cousin, Essential Oil of Lavender; this oil is used  for its healing properties and pleasant scent.  It is actually part of the mint family and is used as an herb and as an ornamental flower.  The oil is used to calm and cleanse skin.

Lavender oil is used in our Botanical Balancing Cleanser and Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer.

L-ergothioneine

L-ergothioneine is an amino acid. It is a nutrient whose purpose is to act as a building block of proteins. It is an antioxidant and is typically intended for minimizing the effects of stress on the skin. It is derived from many types of grains, plants, and beans, and is also found in oyster and other types of mushrooms.

L-ergothioneine can be found our Antioxidant Marine Serum, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Oxygenated Marine Complex, and Vitamin C Eye Serum.

Leuconostoc (Radish Root Ferment)

Leuconostoc (Radish Root Ferment)  This fermented vegetable root is a fantastic substitute for non-natural preservatives.  When used as a catalyst in the fermentation process, it works quite well.  Our formulas need to have some level of preservative, so it may as well be a proven natural one.  Leuconostoc works together with Lactobacillus & Coconut Extract to give our products an extended shelf life.

Leuconostoc (Radish Root Ferment) is used in our MicroPearl Exfoliator, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, Citrus Cleansing Milk, All Day Hydrating Mist, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Botanical Balancing Cleanser, Marine Hydrating Mask, Purifying Sea Mask, SeaClear Cleansing Gel, ReFresh Marine Cleanser, and Marine+ Vitamin C Serum.  Our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer also uses a filtrate form of Leuconostoc.

L-Fucose is a form of free sugar found at low levels in mammals.  Bio-based L-Fucose is natural and manufactured from a beech wood hydrolysate without solvents.  It is recognized as an important sugar playing a role in cell to cell interactions and is used as an anti-inflammatory.

L-Fucose is used in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream.

Licorice Root Extract

Licorice Root Extract – do you know that some people use licorice as a shampoo?  We didn’t until we looked up.  It just so happened to be a favorite of King Tut (we read that he was buried with it).  Our old friend Pliny the Elder, who makes a guest appearance elsewhere on our site, “…recommended it to clear the voice and alleviate thirst and hunger.”  We don’t know who quoted it originally.  It’s all over the place if you look it up.  We just assume it was from Pliny himself.  It was good for long marches and in the Middle Ages, was the Tums of its day.  It seems that there’s almost no malady that licorice won’t help with.  We feel the same about chocolate.  But really, why do we like it?  We mainly use it for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its effectiveness in helping to control Rosacea and dark spots on the skin.

Licorice Root Extract is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Linoleate

Linoleate is basically a salt, derived from linoleic acid, itself an Omega 6 fatty acid.  It is used as an emollient to bind other ingredients together.

Linoleate is found in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Lithothamnium Algae

Lithothamnium Algae is a red seaweed that grows very slowly. It has a coral like structure and thrives in depths of about 60 to 90 feet, mostly on the sandy surface of the seabed. Some concentrations of this algae can form reefs several centuries old. Because it grows very slowly, it absorbs large amounts of the trace elements in the water and as a result is rich in calcium, magnesium, boron, and zinc. Besides its nutrient content, lithothamnium acts as a superior exfoliating agent.

Lithothamnium Algae can be found in our Purifying Sea Mask.

Lithothamnium Algae Extract can be found in our MicroPearl Exfoliator, and Dual Action Cooling Gel.

Lonicera Japonica (Honeysuckle)

Lonicera japonica (Honeysuckle) is native to Asia (japonica is of Japan), has a nice sounding name and a pretty flower, but is considered an invader in the U.S. because of its fast unruly growth.  Believe it or not, it is capable of smothering bushes and even causing small trees to topple.  It must be true.  We found a picture of Honeysuckle trying to eat a fence.  Another shot from the front lines showing one actually devouring an entire wall.  Honeysuckle extract is used as a natural preservative because of its antibacterial and antiviral properties, and it also has the benefit of protecting against ultra-violet rays.

Honeysuckle extract isn’t used in any of our products anymore in favor of more effective natural preservatives, but we liked the picture and story so much we decided to let it stay in our index for awhile.  Keep your distance.  These things are slow but as you can see, a bit dangerous.

Mentha Piperita (Peppermint)

Mentha piperita (Peppermint) oil, a less concentrated version of our Essential Oil of Mentha Piperita, is actually a cross between spearmint and watermint.  We’ve never heard of watermint until we started researching all of our ingredients.  The peppermint oil is used to relieve skin irritation and inflammation.  It calms rashes, itchiness, and dry skin.  The main component of Mentha piperita is menthol.  It has a pleasant smell, probably reminds you of the holidays, and is used to make candy canes.

Mentha piperita oil is used in our ReFresh Marine Cleanser and MicroPearl Exfoliatior.  Menthol is used on our Dual Action Cooling Gel.

Mentha Veridis (Spearmint)

Mentha Veridis (Spearmint), similar to its minty cousin, peppermint, grows in just about any climate but is native to Europe and Asia.  Unlike peppermint though, spearmint contains very little menthol.  Spearmint gets its distinctive smell from Carvone, which is a member of a family of natural chemicals called terpenoids.  It is the same basic chemistry that produces the distinctive smell from an orange rind.  We use it mainly for its natural scent, but history tells us that it (used to) have many other uses.  In 1597, John Gerard authored a book entitled Herbal, in which he states: [Spearmint] is good against watering eyes and all manner of break outs on the head and sores.  It is applied with salt to the biting of mad dogs.”  Really.  Look it up.  Also, we found this:  “They lay it on the stinging of wasps and bees with good success.”  And there’s something about feasts and banquets, but we’ll stop here for now.  Like we mentioned, we use it for the nice scent and we do try to keep our distance from mad dogs.

Mentha Veridis (Spearmint) is used in our Purifying Sea Mask.

Micronized Silver

Micronized silver – yep, silver.  100% natural, and a mineral.  We know, you are probably thinking that’s what rich people are born with in their mouths or makes you think of your dad’s old bicycle.  This is a bit different.  Silver in this state is actually a natural antiseptic with antibacterial properties.  It also acts as a natural preservative.  Now, we don’t recommend you try chewing on that silver spoon your grandmother kept in the keepsake drawer.  Only your dentist would benefit from that.  But when used properly, silver can serve a noble purpose when it comes to the skin.

Micronized silver is found in our Marine Bio-repair Serum and Vitamin C Eye Serum.

Nannochloropsis Algae (Omega-7 & 3 Fatty Acids)

Nannochloropsis algae (Omega-7 & 3 fatty acids) is known as a genus of algae which is itself is comprised of six known species.  We all recall of course that a genus comes between family and species in the hierarchy of life.  If you want to know more about this sort of thing, go here: Here’s a picture, courtesy of Wikipedia, if you really want to see some nannochloropsis.  We found our own under a microscope.  Don’t go looking for them in our formulas.  You won’t be able to see them but they are in there doing good stuff.  They are high in fatty acids and contain a range of pigments including astaxanthin, a very powerful antioxidant.

Nannochloropsis algae is found in our Oxygenated Marine Complex, Marine Body Silk, and Antioxidant Marine Serum.

Olea Europaea (Olive)

Olea Europaea is just a fancy name for an olive, and sometimes olive butter.  A European olive if you insist.  Nothing terribly scientific about this ingredient.  No, we don’t put olives in any of our formulas so don’t go looking.  But we do use olive oil from time to time.  Did you know that the total annual worldwide production of olives is about 20,000,000 tons.  Let’s see now, at 80 olives per pound and 2,000 pounds per ton, we are talking about a lot of olives every single year.  And did you know that about 90% of all olives are pressed into olive oil, leaving only 10% for use in martinis, salads, and the occasional recipe.

Olea Europaea is used in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream.

Oleic Acid

Oleic Acid is found mostly in olive oil but is also derived from grapeseed and many other nuts, vegetables, and seeds.  It has been shown to promote the production of antioxidants, elements that can help trap harmful free radicals in the body.

Oleic Acid is in our Citrus Cleansing Milk.

Organic Honey

Organic Honey, not as easy as it sounds.  It all has to do with bee keepers, land owners, and certification testing.  The areas where bees pollinate has to be pesticide free and inspected regularly.  And the honey that is produced also goes through rigorous testing.  But why use honey?  First, it has been used for centuries as a natural moisturizer.  But honey also has antioxidants that work to fight bacteria.  When combined with water it also works as a mild antiseptic.  There is all kinds of science to back this up, and we even found recommendations out there to use just plain honey as a facial mask.  It works, but it sure is messy.  We recommend our Marine Hydrating Mask to get the same or better benefits without half the mess.  And using our approach, you won’t have to worry about bears sneaking up on you.

Organic Honey is used in our Marine Hydrating Mask.

Oryza sativa (Rice Bran)

Oryza sativa (Rice bran) – this is your basic every day variety of rice, a human staple since the dawn of time.  We use the oil, pressed from the inner and outer layers of the grain.  Benefits include acting as a natural sun protectant, shielding the skin from ultra violet radiation, high concentrations of vitamin E, and its properties as a moisturizer.  It is also high in squalene content making it very effective on dry skin.

Oryza sativa (Rice Bran) oil is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Palmitoleic acid (Omega-7 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids)

It isn’t necessary to take a course in organic chemistry to understand Omega-3 and Omega-7 fats, but it helps.  Assuming most reading this haven’t, or have forgotten, suffice it to say that these two fats are considered good fats.  Omega 3 is fairly well known.  Omega 7 a bit less so, but there are many sources of information out there for those who wish to know more.

Palmitoleic acid (Omega-7 fatty acids) is a monounsaturated fat.  It is found naturally in our skin and throughout nature, macadamia nuts or Sea Buckthorn for example.  Palmitoleic acid is not an essential fatty acid.  This means our bodies can make it.  We don’t need to get it from food. Omega-7 acts as an emollient and a moisturizer and helps slow moisture loss from the body.  Palmitoleic acid has also been found to act as a skin lightener.  The numerical designation 7 is technical in nature and has to do with the chemical structure of atoms that make it up. Omega-7 fatty acids are used to rejuvenate the skin and promote healing of dry, cracked skin and decrease inflammation. This is a powerful source of nourishment for the skin’s collagen, strengthening and repairing existing skin.

Omega-3 on the other hand is a polyunsaturated essential fatty acid.  It is more well-known than its Omega-7 cousin.  Our bodies can’t make it and we need to supplement in our diets or find other sources in order to get it.  It is abundant in fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and tuna.  It is also found in some vegetables, seeds and nuts.

Omega-7 and 3 Fatty Acids are in our Marine Bio-repair Serum, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Blemish Antiseptic Oil, and Sensitive Skin Calming Oil.

Pearl Crystals are found in our MicroPearl Exfoliator.

Perfluorodecalin & Perfluorohexane (Liquid Oxygen)

Perfluorodecalin & Perfluorohexane (Liquid Oxygen) is a compound that has the ability to dissolve and carry large amounts of oxygen to the surface of the skin.  It is a synthetic inert molecule that absorbs and stores high amounts of oxygen and when applied topically, mimics the bodies breathing process.  It has been the subject of research as a breathable liquid.  As we age, the oxygen levels in our skin deteriorates up to 50% by age 40.  Liquid oxygen helps to re-mediate this loss.  It is used as a skin conditioning agent, allowing oxygen to be diffused into the skin when applied directly. It is also used medically to speed the healing process and has been effective in helping to treat burn victims.

Perfluorodecalin & Perfluorohexane (Liquid Oxygen) is used in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Oxygenated Marine Complex, Vitamin C Eye Serum, and Antioxidant Marine Serum.

Persea gratissima (Avocado) oil

Persea gratissima (Avocado) oil – did you know that avocado is also known as butter fruit, alligator pear, and cheese pear?  There is an entire alphabet of breeds from the Choquette to the Zutano.  It is rich in vitamins including vitamin A, E, C, B, and K not to mention potassium, lecithin, and fatty acids.  There’s almost no end to its benefits.  Avocado oil is rich in sterolin which reduces the occurrence of dark spots and helps to soften skin. It is also used to help relieve inflamed skin conditions.  We like it for its moisturizing properties and its ability to protect from ultra-violet radiation.  Oh, and it’s a pretty good snack as well.  So, everyone knows what an avocado looks like so we thought we’d put up a picture of an avocado shake.  They make them in Indonesia and Philippines, but you can make one at home just as easy.  Blend 2 cups of ice cubes and a cup of whatever variety of milk that is on hand.  Then toss in a peeled and seeded avocado, a teaspoon of vanilla extract and two teaspoons of sugar.  Get your shake going and then pour it into a glass laced with chocolate syrup.  And there you have it.  Say thanks to Marjorie.

Avocado Oil is found in our Botanical Balancing Cleanser.

Phytosterols

Phytosterols, also known as plant sterols, are found in fruits, vegetables, lentils, soybeans, and whole grains, amongst others.  Rice bran, corn and wheat germ are the top 3 in terms of mg/100 grams.  The human body does not make phytosterols and they must be taken from dietary or other sources.  Phytosterols in skin care formulas are thought to calm inflammation.  As a dietary supplement, many people use phytosterols to control cholesterol.

Phytosterols are found in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream.

Plankton Extract

Plankton Extract comes from the marine species plankton, which are the base of the ocean’s food chain. Phytoplankton depend of photosynthesis and are food to many larger creatures of the ocean while contributing to the Earth’s oxygen supply. They are mostly single cell microscopic organisms and are literally everywhere in the ocean and simply drift with the oceans current. Plankton extract is used for antioxidant anti-inflammatory properties as well as their high concentration of omega 3 fatty acids.

Plankton Extract is used in our Marine Firming Cream and HydraBoost Recovery Cream.

Plantain

Plantain – we aren’t talking about the edible fruit, but we refer to the meadow flower that has the same spelling.  The official name is English Plantain but we are certain it isn’t the only one.  It has many less common but more interesting names.  Ribble Grass is our favorite.  Here’s few others:  Ribwort, Lamb’s Tongue. Hen Plant, and the medieval name of Quinquenervia.  We aren’t sure why.  It grows everywhere.  Chances are there’s some in your backyard.  Sometimes described as “a little gem,” the extract is anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and analgesic.  It is rich in vitamin C and helps hydrate the skin.

Plantain is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Polysorbate-20

Polysorbate-20 is a sugar alcohol, derived from sorbitol, which occurs naturally in many different fruits. It is most commonly used to emulsify oil and water. Pumice

Pumice is a volcanic rock that has an unusual foamy texture. It is formed in volcanic activity and ejected from the earth under high pressure and great heat.  It rapidly cools as it is exposed to the air. For our purposes, it is ground into a fine powder and used as gentle exfoliator to aid in the removal of dead skin cells.  However, someone back about 800 years ago had a much more creative mind than we did and made a king out of pumice.  Pretty cool.  If you want to see the real thing, head on over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (aka The Met Fifth Avenue), Gallery 304, The Medieval Europe Gallery.  That’s where King Pumice is living nowadays.  Or just get some MicroPearl Exfoliator and it’ll make you feel like the royalty that you are.

Pumice is used in our MicroPearl Exfoliator.

Pycnogenol

Pycnogenol is the US registered trademark name for a French pine bark extract known as Pinus pinaster.  It can also be taken from other types of bark such as witch hazel or grape seed.  It aids in circulation and promotes healthier skin tone.

Pycnogenol is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Red Clay

Red Clay, as the other clays in our products, serve several purposes.  Clay’s are similar in that they absorb and draw out toxins in the skin.  As a result, they tighten the skin’s surface, improve circulation, and help clear the skin’s texture.  Clay’s differ in their composition and the types of minerals them can impart.  Red clay from France, also known as Rhassoul Clay from Morocco, is mineral rich.  It has copper, magnesium, calcium, iron, silica, and potassium…all of which condition the skin.

Red Clay is in our Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer and Spot on Acne.

Resveratrol is used in our Antioxidant Marine Serum, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Oxygenated Marine Serum, and Vitamin C Eye Serum.

Rhatany Root Extract

Rhatany root – is an uncommon ingredient containing high concentrations of tannins known as Rhataniatannic acid that reduces swelling and inflammation.  Sounds like one of favorite characters on Saturday Night Live, RIP.  Anyway, Rhatany is a shrub that grows primarily in mountainous regions of Peru and across the Americas.  It is also known as krameria root.  The beneficial agents of Rhatany are found in its bark and its root.

Rhatany root extract is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Riboflavin

Riboflavin – a princely type of Vitamin B formerly known a Vitamin G.  It comes from ribose, a sugar whose reduced form is ribitol and flavin (aka flavus), which is the oxidized molecule that gives it a yellowish color.  It naturally occurs in our blood stream and is water soluble, meaning our bodies must constantly renew it.  Low levels of riboflavin cause all kinds of unpleasant things.  We won’t go into detail because none of us are qualified in the fine science of medicine.   It is found in all kinds of food sources including diary products, vegetables, nuts, and meats.

Riboflavin is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary)

Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) smells good, grows just about everywhere in the American Southwest, and tastes good on chicken.  It is actually a member of the mint family and its cousins are lavender, orgenano and thyme.  We like the name.  It means sea dew.  Ros is Latin for dew and marinus means sea.  It has lots of Vitamin B6, calcium, and iron and seems to be good for a whole host of things besides chicken.  It is said to improve brain function and memory.  We are still waiting to see if we are going to get smarter.  As far as Ocean Rescue is concerned, we like it for its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

Rosemary is used in our Spot on Acne, Blemish Antiseptic Oil, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Marine Body Silk, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, and ReFresh Marine Cleanser.

Salvia officinalis (Sage) and Salvia sclarea (Clary Sage)

Salvia officinalis (Sage) – common sage has lots of uses, both culinary where most of us have come across it, and in skin care.  Sage stimulates the surface of the skin and has antibacterial and antiseptic properties.  It also helps calm different types of skin irritations and its antioxidants help push back signs of stress.  Sage has high concentrations of vitamin A and calcium.

Some researchers also point to sage as a source of “enhanced cognitive performance.”  Our guess is that means you will do better on tests and be an all-around better person.  We aren’t quite certain how that works though.  Maybe you make a necklace out of some sage and wear it when you go to take your finals. Let us know if it works, but we suggest you study anyway, just in case the research isn’t quite as solid as we thought.

When researching sage, we have to let you know about how the Missouri Botanical Garden describes this herb:  “[Sage] features whorls of two-lipped, lavender-blue flowers (to 1 inch long) in short, upright spikes in late spring.” Whorls?  What a great word and a colorful description.

Anyway, that’s it for our sage show tonight.  Be sure to join us next week when our special guest will be Star Anise.

Sage is used in our ReFresh Marine Cleanser.  Clary Sage is used in our Sensitive Skin Calming Oil.

Sesamum indicum (Sesame seed oil)

Sesamum indicum (Sesame seed oil) – so this one got us to thinking, where did the phrase “Open Sesame” come from.  We looked it up.  It comes from One Thousand and One Nights and the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.  Something to do with a scroll, on which were recorded all sorts of medicinal uses of plants and herbs, probably considered magical at the time.  The scroll was hidden in a charmed cave and to open the cave, Ali overheard the bad guys muttering Open Sesame.  So apparently he goes into the cave with his brother, who later forgets the phrase and becomes trapped, but not before trying to open the cave with the name of other grains on the scroll.  Does it have anything to do with Sesame Street?  Yes, lore has it that the name referred to a location where magical and exciting things happen.  We aren’t sure if it’s true, but it makes for a nice story.  Anyway, on with the show.  Sesame oil is sort of magical itself.  It is high in Vitamin E, B complex, and A.  It contains zinc, copper, magnesium and phosphorus, making it a blockbuster for antioxidants.  It absorbs into the skin easily and is known to soothe skin suffering damage from the environment and overexposure to sun.  It is an excellent moisturizer and acts to keep the skin hydrated.  Can’t go wrong with this stuff, and now you know a little bit of its history.  We aren’t sure we have it completely right (we tend to think that everything on the internet is true) but if you know of a different version, let us know.

Oh.  If you are wondering about the picture, we wanted to use one of the signs that says Sesame Street on it but figured this street looked a lot more interesting than a sign.

Sesame seed oil is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Sodium Hyaluronate

Sodium Hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid which itself is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It helps skin absorb water more effectively because of its small molecular size. It can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water and can reduce any sort of trans-epidermal water loss.

Sodium Hyaluronate can be found in HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Bio-repair Serum, Marine Firming Cream, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, All Day Hydrating Mist, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Dual Action Cooling Gel, and Oxygenated Marine Complex.

Sodium PCA

Sodium PCA is the salt of a natural amino acid known as pyroglutamic acid, and is found in many proteins.  It also occurs naturally in the skin and help cells retain moisture.  It absorbs easily and is a humectant, holding its own weight in water several times over.  It is derived from different fruits and vegetables and is also found in seaweed and algae.

Sodium PCA is used on our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Spirulina maxima (Algae)

Spirulina maxima algae is a microscopic blue-green algae thriving on photosynthesis. It lives on sunlight and has existed and evolved over billions of years. Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is very rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, carotenoids and antioxidants. Spirulina Algae & Spirulina Algae Extract can be found in our Marine Body Silk, All Day Hydrating Mist, and ReFresh Marine Cleanser.

Squalane

Squalane is derived from squalene (notice they are spelled differently). Squalene is present in both animals and plants, usually rice bran, wheat germ, olives or amaranth seed. It is a rapidly absorbing botanical lipid that completely penetrates the skin. Its hydration properties help to prevent the formulation of dark spots and protects against harmful UV radiation of the sun. It will aid in clearing difficult problems such as scars, inflamed skin, rashes, and dry cracked skin.

Squalane can be found in our Botanical Balancing Cleanser, Blemish Antiseptic Oil, and Sensitive Skin Calming Oil.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (Vitamin C Ester)

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (Vitamin C Ester) is a mild form of vitamin C that is modified to be more lipid soluble, which means that it can easily penetrate the surface layer of the skin. Vitamin C Ester stimulates collagen and connective tissue production, which strengthens and repairs capillary walls. This ingredient is also used for its high quality antioxidants.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is used in our Marine Bio-repair Serum, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Blemish Antiseptic Oil, Sensitive Skin Calming Oil, and Oxygenated Marine Complex.

Tricolor Wild Pansy (Jack Jump Up and Kiss Me)

Tricolor (Wild pansy) – well, we had thought Ribble Grass (Plantain) was the best alternate name we’d come across so far, but Wild Pansy has now won the all-time best ever ingredient with the coolest alternate names, info courtesy of Wikipedia.  Ready for this…both quality and quantity: Tickle-my-fancy, Come-and-cuddle-me, Three faces in a hood, Love-in-idleness, Heartsease and the all-time best alternate name goes to: Wild Pansy for Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me.    This flower has been cool through the ages.  In Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Oberon speaks to Puck of Cupid and Love-in-Idleness…

Fetch me that flower, the herb I showed thee once.
The juice of it on sleeping eyelids laid
Will make or man or woman madly dote
Upon the next live creature that it sees.

For more on Oberon and how he deals with his problems with Titania using his command over Love-in-idleness, well, now you know what to read.  Time for us to get back to work.

Who needs oysters when you have a field full of Tricolor?  So what do we use it for?  First, its edible, like our seaweeds.  The extracts contain antioxidants and are reportedly good for the heart, hence one of its Shakespearean names of Heartsease.  Its anti-microbial properties are useful in skin care and can be useful for treatment of eczema and acne.  Sometimes it would seem that this flower thinks for itself.  As you would imagine, it is quite delicate.  Did you know that when it rains, it bends over so only its stem is exposed?  Well, jump up and kiss me.  We didn’t know that.

Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Undaria Algae (Wakame)

Undaria Algae is in our SeaClear Cleansing Gel and Citrus Cleansing Milk.

Vanilla Tahitensis

Vanilla tahitensis is one of three types of vanilla that grows in the Polynesian Islands. It comes from the edible vanilla orchard. Vanilla tahitensis has limited skincare benefit but does work nicely as a natural scent.

Vanilla tahitensis is used in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, and Marine Bio-repair Serum.

Vitis vinifera (Grapeseed)

Vitis vinifera (Grapeseed) is your common everyday grape.  Most of the time we go for seedless grapes for that summer time snack, but if you get the variety that has seeds, then you’ve got yourself a find vitis vinifera.  The oil extract comes for the skin and seeds.  Vitis vinifera has natural antioxidant and anti-microbial properties.  It used extensively as a skin conditioner and is a natural preservative.  Also of benefit in our formulas is its ability to absorb ultra-violet radiation making it useful for skin protection.

Vitis vinifera (Grapeseed) is used in our Ultra-light SPF 30 Moisturizer.

Wax

Wax.  Really?  We promised to list everything, and we are almost at the end.  So we feel sort of obligated.  It’s in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream.  Waxes are organic compounds that consist of long alkyl chains. So what does adding wax do?  Waxes are an emulsifier.  In other words, wax works to combine two or more otherwise unmixable substances together, binding them in a way that they are not able to do in their natural stable state.  Think of oil and vinegar.  Poured into a bowl, they separate, but add some Dijon mustard, whisk together, and presto, a tasty salad dressing.  It is the same thing with wax.  Wax helps bind liquids together into a smooth consistent cream.

So far, we’ve only tried Wax in our HydraBoost Recovery Cream.  We’ll bet you’d have never noticed if we hadn’t call it to your attention.

Xanthan Gum

Xanthan gum.  Well, if Wild Pansy was one of our more interesting ingredients, xanthan gum has to be just about our most boring.  Someone has to be last it seems and this one qualifies. It is used mainly as a thickener and to prevent other ingredients from separating, although it is not itself an emulsifier.  It’s kind of like the handrail for all the other ingredients…it keeps everyone from falling overboard. It is often used as a substitute for gluten for foods made for gluten-free diets.  Its source products are any number of grains or dairy (mostly corn), is produced by fermentation, and made into a polysaccharide.  You will find xanthan gum in everything from salad dressing to jelly beans.  Sadly, there are no alternate names for xanthan gum, amusing or otherwise.  Like we said.  Boring.  A thankless job but it has to be done.

So, this is the Xanthan Gum of Camelback Mountain.  If you are a local, then you will recognize the name as a mountain hiking trail here in our home town.  One of our staff saved a life on that exact spot about 8 years ago.

Chances are pretty good that you heard it here first.

Xanthan gum is used in our MicroPearl Exfoliator, HydraBoost Recovery Cream, Marine Firming Cream, Vitamin C Eye Serum, Non-oily Antiseptic Moisturizer, Citrus Cleansing Milk, Antioxidant Marine Serum, Marine Hydrating Mask, Purifying Sea Mask, SeaClear Cleansing Gel, Marine+ Vitamin C Serum, Spot on Acne, and ReFresh Marine Cleanser.

Eye of Newt (Witches Brew)

“Early Celebrity Chefs”

So, this ingredient party has to come to an end somewhere.  Francis, one of our first customers caught us in the middle of writing it (this ingredient section alone has taken us almost 7 months). Each day we’d post five or so new ingredients until we had worked our way through all 100 or so.  She asked us how we know so much about this stuff. The easy answer is that we’ve been working for a few years on Ocean Rescue, trying to get everything right and explain our ingredients as accurately as possible. Anyway, she wanted to know if we could tell her what eye of newt is.  No, but as good students of making sure we respond wherever we can, we promised to look it up for her. First, we were led to this quote, from a cartoon done by one certain John Donegan, in which he writes about three witches gathered around a cauldron, cooking up a questionable brew: “You can’t call it minestrone – minestrone doesn’t have newts in it.”  From that line, we found a few good stories, but this one seems to be the most authentic.

Eye of newt was referred to by the 2nd witch in Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, or as it is more commonly known, just Macbeth.  When it was written, around 1606, witches were a pretty big deal.  No one really liked them but believed they were capable of all sorts of mischief and worse.  If a witch were caught, well, it never seemed to end well for the witch.

But, for the question at hand, let’s put things in context.  The witches liked to think they could control Macbeth by brewing up all sorts of, errrr, soups shall we say. Like most tales, there is some element of truth to all this.  Witches, or practicer of the Dark Arts as Snape would tell us, knew the power of herbs.  Here’s the chant Shakespeare’s 2nd witch (there were three at the meeting) went on with:

Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing,–
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.”

Yikes.  Not something we’d order for lunch, but its not as scary as it sounds.  Eye of Newt was probably mustard seed, as it sort resembles a newts eye.  Newts by the way are lizard like critters. And yes, mustard seeds are used to make mustard and to keep your home free of being haunted, provided you spread the seeds around your doorstep.

Toe of frog?  It’s really a buttercup leaf.  Pretty name but you definitely don”t want to eat them.  You won’t feel or look well.  What does it have to do with a toe of frog?  The leaf looks like a frogs toe.  Makes sense.

Wool of bat?  Actually holly leaves.  If you lay holly leaves side by side, they resemble bats wings.

Tongue of dog – that’s the herb houndstongue.  We don’t really get this one. Houndstounge doesn’t look like any sort of dog, or hound we’ve seen, much less a tongue.  Apparently there is some folklore on this one.  Supposedly if you put one of the leaves in your shoe, you were able to ward off dogs.  Hmmm.  If that’s a real problem for you, then by all means give it a try.

Adders Fork is really Adders tongue, a real fern with an amazing resemblance to a snake’s tongue.  Just a fern but a spooky looking one and perfect for witches brew.  Check it out here. Looks just like a snake’s tongue, doesn’t it?

Blind-worm’s sting.  Easy.  A blindworm is a limbless reptile but they aren’t snakes.  Pretty harmless but creepy enough for witches.

Lizard leg is just ordinary ivy.  We aren’t certain of the relationship other than, similar to lizards, ivy spreads across the ground and up trees.

Howlet’s wing.  A howlet is an owl, so a howlet’s wing…

So there you have it Francis.  Eye of Newt and Witches Brew demystified.

Toe of frog, Wool of bat, Tongue of dog, Adders fork, Blindworms, Lizard legs, and Howlet’s wings are used in Witches Brew, but we don’t stock any of them.  And rest assured, none of these ingredients appear in any Ocean Rescue formula.
